As we approach the national holiday of eating, I thought I might be appropriate to offer a little support for your digestion! In Ayurveda, our digestion is related to the fire element. When our fire is balanced, we easily digest and assimilate our food, but when our digestive fire is compromised we may experience symptoms of indigestion such as gas, bloating, or heaviness after eating. Thanksgiving is often the time we experience ALL of the symptoms unfortunately.
Spices are a great way to boost our digestive fire. Luckily there are plenty of amazing digestive spices already in our Thanksgiving dishes such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, clove, and ginger. Drinking a digestive tea before or during a meal is a simple digestive aid as well. Below is a recipe for a digestive tea of equal parts cumin, coriander, and fennel, also known as CCF tea. This three seed tea is a beautiful golden color with a mild nutty flavor. I typically make a large amount and store it in a jar to have with bigger meals.
I hope you and your belly enjoy it. ! May our agni (digestive fire) be strong and our hearts be full of gratitude this Thanksgiving!
For large batch:
Take 1/4 Cup of Cumin, Coriander, and Fennel Seeds and combine in a pan. Toast the seeds for 3 - 5 minutes or until fragrant. Let your seeds cool and place in a jar to store them.
To make tea:
Take 2 tsp CCF tea and steep in boil water for 3 - 5 minutes. Strain and enjoy with or before your meal!
